Ukraine

by Richard McGill

The fragility of international law has been highlighted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
What is the point of legitimising war with global agreement on the acceptable ways of killing soldiers
and the unacceptable methods?

World is full of people going
‘bout their daily life

Happy families living, children,
and a father with his wife

They look upon their leaders
to save them from every hell

Health care and other services
to run their country well

But all leaders love their power
and their riches from the land

Can’t get enough money,
stolen from the needy hand

And soon they look with envy
at what’s in the next country

And mobilise the army
“our nation will be free”

But the neighbour is not happy
and so must respond in kind

Both armies good at killing,
maiming many, never mind

Drones above to guide them
and to help the grim reaper

Far away, a soldier’s mother
now becomes a mourning weeper

The generals watch computers
show the battle like a game

Dehumanise the conflict there’s
no point in taking blame

Those pixels on the monitor
are really flesh and blood

Life ebbing crimson now
and is bleeding in the mud
